More information about Vieste & the sea caves
Vieste area on the tongue of the land projecting into the sea, gives the feeling of living on a beautiful island, dotted with thousands of colorful sails that cradle the blowing wind and the rocking of the waves. The territory stretches to the north-west and south, with sinuous coasts and between rocky peaks that often plunge abruptly into the sea, gives space to beaches of considerable size and beauty. The sandy beaches of Vieste are shining fine, from pale pink silver, more soft and velvet and as fine as powder that buries the foot very easily.
Remembered for their breadth and length, on the northern side, the beaches of Vieste including that of S. Lorenzo (km 2) Punta Lunga (km 0.8), Scialmarino (km 4.5), and of Sfinale Sfinalicchio (km 1.8), and at noon the Castle (4 km) and New Haven (2.5 km), protected by two characteristic islets. Although small, the Bay is enclosed between two ridges dotted with thick fragrant pine forest, and is most striking. To this lends the Architiello Vieste a ridge extensively drilled to its entrance as a portentous triumphal arch.
Vieste, legend has it that the Architiello towers had been built from the sea Nymphs and Tritons to welcome in the month of July Neptune, king of the sea, on a pleasure trip with his wife Amphitrite and to render parties and honors. Just as beautiful, follows the gravel beaches of Fields (km 0.8) and Pugnochiuso (km 0.4). All along the coast of Vieste and Gargano, several square towers can still be seen.

The outposts erected in Vieste along the coast in the first half of 500, during the Viceroyalty of Spain. Originally there were 25 and were used primarily to point out, with smoke by day and fire by night, the dangers of invasion by enemies or pirates. Among the lush vegetation and clean sea, crystalline, transparent, high coast of Vieste welcomes many cavities that are true wonders of magic and wonder, operated by the glare of lights and colors, from diaphanous transparency of the water and from the artistic game eroded rocks and smerlettate. Vieste's imagination and charm is its largest outlet of wonder among the astonished and dreamy.
At Vieste the fishermen baptized these posts with the most curious of names, such as to name a few: Screwed cave, Bell, the Smuggler, the cave of the Two Eyes Of Pigeons, Bats, cave Hot or Viole, Palette, the Sirens, and the Dream of Pharaoh, The Cave Emerald dei Marmi and the Serpent. At Vieste another beautiful call is the Pizzomunno, the mammoth and magnificent monolith that rises just a few steps from the cliff on which stands the Castle of Vieste almost to monitor the country's fortunes, like a grumpy old guard. At Vieste on the Gargano coast although they plunge abruptly into the sea, the beaches are of considerable size and of great beauty, and are caught between two rocky points that extend to picturesque arches.
The sand from Vieste's beautiful beaches fine in quality, pale pink & silver is always sparkling, the best beaches of the Adriatic, the sand is like soft velvet, as fine as powder and the foot buries easily when walked upon.

On the settendrionale of Vieste there are the beaches of Sfinale, Sfinalicchio (Km 1.8), and Scialmarino (km 5), which once bathed the city of Merinum, Punta Lunga and S. Lorenzo or the Convent (Km 2). In the center of the town, in front of the Vieste Lighthouse, is the beach of Marina Piccola. At noon the beach extends from the Castle (4 km) and the Porto Nuovo (Km 2, 5), between the bridge and the tip of Gattarella. The beach of the bay of S. Happy is small, but on the other hand the sea is always calm and clean.

In front of the harbour stands the Architiello. Legend has it that it was built by the marine water lilies to welcome their King Neptune, who wanted to spend his honeymoon here with Amphitrite. Then there are the beaches of Camps and Pugnochiuso which are gravel, but just as beautiful. Vieste on the Gargano coast is high and has many cavities that are true wonders of magic and wonder.
Among the caves of Vieste, the most beautiful are: the cave Screwed, Bell Cave, the cave of Smugglers, the cave of bats, the cave of the Doves, the cave two eyes, the cave Viola, also known as Hot cave, the cave the Sirens, the Cave of Dreams, the cave of the Pharaoh, the Palette cave, the cave dei Marmi, the cave of the Serpent and the emerald cave.
In all there are 26 caves in Vieste & they are all different in light and colours.

The Pizzomunno in Vieste is another wonder of nature and is an impressive and superb monolith that rises just a few steps from the cliff on which stands the Castle of Vieste, as if to guard the fortunes of this wonderful country like a grumpy old guard.

"Vieste, according to old legend". Two young lovers named Pizzomunno and Cristalda landed on the beach and built their love nest. The sirens of the sea, envious and jealous of there joy, turned the beautiful young man into stone, because he did not yield to their blandishments, while the poor bride weeping and chained, was dragged into the dark sea caves. Only once every hundred years in a full moon night, the spell dissolves, and the lovers unite happy again and be sure to have regained their freedom. But at dawn their cruel fate comes again, with terrible sirens and invisible chains the girl is dragged back again into the caves and the young man is transformed again into this colossal monolith, while their complaint echo from wave to wave for another hundred years.
